In the Edo period, the shogunate, feudal lords, villages, and other such entities would store rice for military or defence purposes, or to regulate rice prices. Or that rice. In reality, the rice was stored as unhulled rice, so it was also called 'enoki-momi'. During the Tenpo period (1830-1844), the shogunate had about 550,000 koku of enoki rice, while the feudal domains had about 880,000 koku.
