…He published Bible studies and translations, and was a religious reformer. He emphasized the doctrine of justification by faith before Luther. In 1820, he and his disciple Guillaume Briçonnet and others began reforming the diocese of Meaux, completing the first French translation of the New Testament, but he was soon accused of heresy and fled. He remained silent thereafter. In 1830, he retired to Nérac in the south of France, where he was protected by Marguerite de Navarre, and died. …
