Skate - Skate

A general term for a family of chondrichthyes in the order Skateriformes, or a species in the genus Dipturus . The Rajidae (English name: skates) are characterized by a hard snout due to thick snout cartilage, well-developed pectoral fins forming a wide body disk, and a thin tail with small dorsal and caudal fins at the tip, and are found mainly in shallow tropical waters. They reproduce oviparously, laying eggs in flat, spool-shaped eggshells. There are 13 species in 5 genera known to live in the waters near Japan.

The species D. chinensis (polkadot skate) is characterized by a short snout and many pale spots with unclear outlines on the dorsal surface of the body disc, and can grow up to 70 centimeters in length. It is found in various parts of Japan south of Hokkaido, the East China Sea, Taiwan, etc. It is used in dishes such as nuta, simmered dishes, and dried fish, and is also used as an ingredient in fish paste products. It is listed as "VU" (vulnerable) on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species (as of August 2021).

軟骨魚綱ガンギエイ目の科の総称、またはテングエイ属Dipturusの1種の名称。ガンギエイ科Rajidae（英名skates）は、吻(ふん)軟骨が太いために吻部が硬いこと、胸びれがよく発達して広い体盤を形成すること、尾部が細くてその先端に小さな背びれと尾びれがあることなどが特徴で、おもに温熱帯の浅海に分布する。生殖方法は卵生で、扁平(へんぺい)な糸巻形の卵殻に入った卵を産む。日本近海には5属13種が知られている。

　種としてのガンギエイD. chinensis（英名polkadot skate）は吻が短く、体盤の背面に多くの輪郭の不明瞭(ふめいりょう)な淡色斑(はん)があることが特徴で、最大で全長70センチメートルになる。北海道以南の日本各地、東シナ海、台湾などに分布する。ぬた、煮つけ、干物などにするほか、練り製品の原料にもする。国際自然保護連合（IUCN）のレッド・リストでは、絶滅危惧(きぐ)種中の「危急」（VU）に指定されている（2021年8月時点）。
