Around 390 BC -? Ancient Greek philosopher and astronomer. Born in Pontus on the southern coast of the Black Sea. He entered Plato's Academy and studied under Plato and Aristotle. As was the case with many philosophers of his time, he wrote books in dialogue form on many subjects, but only a few have survived to the present day. Among his many historical works, Heraclides is known as the originator of the idea that Mercury and Venus revolve around the Sun, and as the person who proposed the idea that the Earth moves in a diurnal motion (rotation) on its axis.
