Corbière (English spelling) Tristan Corbière

Corbière (English spelling) Tristan Corbière

French poet. Born on the coast of Brittany. Influenced by his father, a sailor and writer of maritime adventure novels, he longed for the sea from an early age, but developed rheumatism in middle school and his dream was cut short. This sense of frustration, combined with his excessive awareness of his own ugly appearance, led to the formation of a complicated psychology with many twists. His poetry was collected in "Yellow Love", self-published in Paris in 1873, and in it he likens himself to a dog, a toad, a snake, and other creatures, begging for the eternal love of women, chasing the endless dream of sea adventures, singing of the boredom and loneliness of life, and repeatedly mocking himself with wordplay and sober humor. In 1883, after Corbiere's death, Verlaine introduced his poetry as one of the "cursed poets" in the magazine "Lutec." Later, the Surrealist Breton praised "Litany to Sleep" as a pioneering work of automatic writing.
