A theologian of the Antiochene School around ?-390. Bishop of Tarsus (from 378). He attacked the teachings of Arius and was praised as a defender of the Nicene orthodox faith (381, First Council of Constantinople). He is also known for his dispute with the Roman Emperor Julian. As a theologian, he represented the position of the Antiochene School, which placed importance on the literal interpretation of the Bible. However, after his death, he was accused of Nestorian heresy by Cyril of Alexandria. [Tatsuya Moriyasu] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
