The island is located in the southeastern part of Tokushima Prefecture, about 3.7 km south of Mugi Town, Kaifu County. It has an area of 0.65 square kilometers and a circumference of about 3 kilometers. In 1800 (Kansei 12), the Tokushima Domain relocated six households to the island and had them develop the area while also acting as a defense against the sea. From the early Taisho period, the island became popular for bonito and tuna fishing. Oike Pond in the southwest is home to a native habitat of Shiratamamo, one of only four in the world, and is designated a national natural monument. It is part of the Muroto-Anan Coast Quasi-National Park, and there are walking paths on the island. The surrounding waters are home to many rocky reefs known as bae, making it a great place for iso fishing. There is a regular ferry service from Mugi Port. Population 122 (2009).
