People of Quanzhou

Japanese:
People of Quanzhou

A writer of human interest stories from the late Edo period. His real name was Senkichi. His other names included Tsukuba Senkitsu, Sanbunsha Jiraku, Shiba Sanjin, Imitative Tansai, Shireisai, and Kashimaru. He lived on the banks of Tsukuba-cho outside the Yamashita Gomon gate in Edo, and later moved to the banks of the Sumida River. His background is unclear, but it is certain that he was skilled in calligraphy and worked as a copyist. He was also knowledgeable in painting as Shireisai Senki, a disciple of Keisai Eisen. From around 1827 (Bunsei 10), he worked as a copyist for gesaku and haiku, and in the same year he visited Kyokutei Bakin, and thereafter wrote the manuscripts for many of Bakin's works. From there he turned to writing, and wrote such works as "Ukikusa: A Love Story in Fiction" (1829), "Today's Misao Library" (1829?), "A Woman's University of Thought as It Is" (1830), "Ko Sankingoro Kana Writings for Young Women" (1831), "News from Young Women of the World and the Popular Literature" (1834), and "The Rise and Fall of Young Women: Misao's Guide to the History of the Great Peace" (1837). Among them, "News from Young Women" is highly regarded as the masterpiece of human interest works. Tamenaga Shunsui took over "News from Young Women" and Shotei Kinsui took over "News from Young Women" midway through.
