C. Goldbach stated the following conjecture in a letter to L. Euler in 1742: every even number greater than 4 can be expressed as the sum of two prime numbers, such as 4 = 2 + 2, 6 = 3 + 3, ..., and 100 = 3 + 97 = 41 + 59, and every odd number greater than 9 can be expressed as the sum of three prime numbers, such as 9 = 3 + 3 + 3 and 97 = 3 + 5 + 89. This conjecture has attracted the interest of many people as it is a clear-cut yet difficult problem. It remains unsolved to this day, but substantial progress has been made in this century.

C.ゴルドバッハは，1742年のL.オイラーへの手紙の中で次のような予想を述べている。すなわち，4＝2＋2,6＝3＋3，……，100＝3＋97＝41＋59のように，4以上の偶数は，2個の素数の和として表され，また，9＝3＋3＋3,97＝3＋5＋89のように9以上の奇数は3個の素数の和として表されるというのである。この予想は，意味が明りょうでありながら困難な問題として多くの人々の興味を引いてきた。現在もなお解決されていないが，今世紀に入って実質的な進展が見られた。
