Duck - Duck

Japanese: 鼗 - とう
Duck - Duck
A type of drum in China, Korea, and Japan. It is also written as 霉 or 鞀, and in China as 霉羅. In Japan, it is sometimes written as 鞀鼓, but is also called furi tsuzumi or den daiko. A handle is inserted into a small, round-bodied, double-sided drum, and two short strings are tied to the body, with small balls attached to the ends. The handle is turned to strike the leather surface with the balls. A four-faced drum with two bodies stacked on top of each other is called lu zi, one with three is called lei zi, and one with four is called ling zi. In China, it is mentioned in documents such as the Book of Rites and the Analects, and was used in gagaku from the Han Dynasty until recent years.
