The phenomenon in which particles settle in a liquid or gas while being influenced by the walls of a container or by other particles that are settling at the same time. When the settling velocity is measured, it is usually slower than the free settling, which is when particles settle without any other influence. The higher the density of the particles in the liquid, or if the particles aggregate, the slower the settling velocity becomes.
