Kaoru Maruyama

Poet. Born in Oita City on June 8, 1899. He moved frequently due to his father's job transfers as a Ministry of Internal Affairs official, and before he knew it, the idea of ​​an "étranger" was nurtured in him. During his time at Aichi Prefectural Fourth Middle School, he became fascinated with adventure novels, exploration stories, and maritime literature, and enrolled in the Tokyo Higher School of Marine Science and Technology, but was expelled due to beriberi. In 1921 (Taisho 10), he entered the literature department of the Third High School, where he formed friendships with Kuwabara Takeo and Miyoshi Tatsuji. In 1925, he entered the Japanese literature department of Tokyo Imperial University, where he began writing poetry in earnest, participating in "Shiinoki" and "Poetry and Poetics," both led by Momota Soji, and was baptized into the new spiritual poetic movement (L'Esprit Nouveau). In 1932 (Showa 7), he published his first collection of poems, "Sail, Lamp, Seagull," and the following year, together with Hori Tatsuo and Miyoshi Tatsuji, he founded the poetry magazine "Shiki," which continued until 1968, and became the mainstream of Showa lyric poetry. In 1945, he evacuated to Iwanesawa, Nishimurayama County, Yamagata Prefecture. In 1948, he moved to Toyohashi City, and became a lecturer at the Faculty of Letters of Aichi University, and in 1959, a professor there. His collections of poems include "Butsyou Shishu" (1941), "Hana no Shin" (The Core of Flowers) (1946), and "Tsuki Wataru" (Crossing the Moon) (1972). He passed away on October 21, 1974.

詩人。明治32年6月8日大分市に生まれる。内務省官吏であった父の転勤に従い移住を重ね、いつしか「エトランゼエ」の思いがはぐくまれたという。愛知県立四中時代に冒険小説や探検記、海洋文学に熱中し、東京高等商船学校に入学したが、脚気(かっけ)のため除籍。1921年(大正10)第三高等学校文科に入学、桑原(くわばら)武夫、三好達治(みよしたつじ)らと親交を結んだ。25年東京帝国大学国文科に入学、本格的に詩作を始め、百田宗治(ももたそうじ)主宰の『椎(しい)の木』、『詩と詩論』などに参加し、新詩精神運動(レスプリ・ヌーボー)の洗礼を受けた。32年(昭和7)第一詩集『帆(ほ)・ランプ・鴎(かもめ)』を刊行、翌33年堀辰雄(たつお)、三好達治と詩誌『四季』を創刊、『四季』は43年まで続き、昭和叙情詩の主流をなすに至った。45年山形県西村山郡岩根沢に疎開。48年豊橋(とよはし)市に移り、愛知大学文学部講師、59年同教授となった。詩集に『物象詩集』(1941)、『花の芯(しん)』(1946)、『月渡る』(1972)などがある。昭和49年10月21日没。
