Japanese: ツルリンドウ - つるりんどう

The stem is creeping, and after flowering, beautiful reddish purple fruits protrude from the top of the corolla (illustration). It is the only species of Japanese Gentianaceae that bears berries. A smooth perennial herb with a slender stem 20-80cm long and green or greenish purple. The stem leaves are ovate-triangular to triangular-lanceolate, with 3-5 veins, 3-8cm long, 1.5-4.5cm wide, and circular to slightly heart-shaped at the base, with short stalks. Flowers appear from August to October, with one or several in the leaf axils, and are pentamerous. The calyx lobes are needle-shaped and linear. The corolla is pale purple to bluish purple, narrow funnel-shaped, and widens toward the tip.
