A disease in which the peripheral nerves are damaged, causing motor and sensory abnormalities. When one nerve is affected, it is called mononeuritis, and when many nerves are affected at the same time, it is called polyneuritis; most cases are the latter. Causes are varied, including bacterial toxins (leprosy, syphilis, diphtheria, typhoid, influenza, sepsis, etc.), chemical poisoning (alcohol, lead, mercury, arsenic, etc.), metabolic disorders (diabetes, uremia), collagen disease, malignant tumors, nutritional disorders (beriberi, anemia, etc.), and trauma, and symptoms include pain, sensory abnormalities, muscle paralysis, and hypoesthesia along the nerve pathway. 末梢神経が障害され，運動や感覚の異常をきたす病気。一つの神経が冒された場合を単発性神経炎，多くの神経が同時に冒された場合を多発性神経炎といい，ほとんどが後者。原因は細菌毒（ハンセン病，梅毒，ジフテリア，腸チフス，インフルエンザ，敗血症等），化学中毒（アルコール，鉛，水銀，ヒ素等），代謝異常（糖尿病，尿毒症），膠原(こうげん)病，悪性腫瘍，栄養障害（脚気(かっけ)，貧血等），外傷などさまざまで，神経の経路に沿って痛み，知覚異常，筋肉麻痺(まひ)，知覚鈍麻などもみられる。治療は原因療法のほか，鎮痛薬，ビタミンB₁投与，マッサージ，電気療法など。→神経痛
