According to the Records of the Grand Historian, the founder, Yu, served Shun and made a great contribution to flood control of the Yellow River, and was given the throne (abdication). The throne was then passed down hereditarily, and the first dynasty, Xia, was established. It lasted for over 400 years, with 17 generations under Yu, until King Jie, Lugui, was destroyed by King Tang of the Shang dynasty. The existence of the Xia dynasty has not yet been confirmed by archaeology, and it is considered a legendary dynasty.
A state established by the Helian clan of the Xiongnu in the Shaanxi and Gansu regions. It was destroyed by Emperor Taiwu of the Northern Wei Dynasty.

『史記』によると，始祖の禹 (う) は舜 (しゆん) に仕えて黄河の治水に功績をあげ，王位を譲られた（禅譲）。その後，王位は世襲され，最初の王朝夏が成立，桀王履癸 (けつおうりき) が殷の湯 (とう) 王に滅ぼされるまで，禹以下17代400年余り続いた。夏の存在は現在まだ考古学的に確認されておらず，伝説上の王朝とされている。
匈奴 (きようど) の赫連 (かくれん) 氏が陝西 (せんせい) ・甘粛 (かんしゆく) 地方に建てた国。北魏の太武帝に滅ぼされた。
