A kingdom that flourished in Java in the 16th and 17th centuries. Its capital was Banten. Farah Tehan, a native of North Sumatra, immigrated here in 1526 and spread Islam, and the next king, Hasanuddin, destroyed the Padjajaran Kingdom and achieved independence (1568). It prospered through trade with Portugal, Ming, the Netherlands, and other countries, and trading posts were built by each country. The city, which contained the royal palace and the residences of vassals, was surrounded by moats and walls. However, after the Netherlands established its base in Jakarta in 1619, it gradually came under pressure, and in 1752 it became a vassal state of the Netherlands and was effectively destroyed.
