A slender perennial plant of the Cyperaceae family that grows around wet grasslands and ponds (illustration). Its thin stems and leaves grow densely to form a clump. The leaves are linear and about 2 mm wide. The stems grow to a height of about 70 cm, and from July to October they produce thin panicles at the top, with brown spikelets scattered about. The fruits are 1.7 mm long and elliptical, with a beak-shaped style base at the top and six bristles at the base. The bristles grow in a way that resembles the growth of a dog's moustache, so they are called "dog's moustache." They are found west of Aichi Prefecture in Honshu, through Shikoku, Kyushu, and the Ryukyu Islands, and in southern China, Southeast Asia, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka.
