…In China, matcha fell out of fashion around the time of the Ming dynasty, but in Japan it became popular among the upper classes, mainly Zen monks, over the next 300 years, and tea mills began to be produced domestically. In the early Muromachi period, there was an excellent tea grinder in front of the gates of Gidainji Temple in Ichijo-Kyogoku, Kyoto, so tea mills came to be known by the other name "Gidain" or "Gidarin." Around the time of Takeno Jōō and Sen no Rikyū, slightly larger purely Japanese-style tea mills appeared. …
