A marine fish of the family Scorpaenidae in the order Scorpaeniformes. At fishmongers, it is sold as kinkin or kinki. It is distributed from the coast of the Sea of ​​Okhotsk in Hokkaido to Suruga Bay, and is particularly common in Hokkaido and the Sanriku region. It is not found in the Sea of ​​Japan. It lives on rocky sea bottoms at depths of 200 to 800 meters, but young fish are often found on slightly shallower sandy and muddy bottoms. It has a low body height and large eyes. Its body is crimson red with a large black spot in the center of its dorsal fin. It has many spines on its head. The spawning season is from January to June, with the peak season being from February to April. The eggs are enclosed in an agaric egg sac and float on the surface of the sea in an oval shape about 35 cm long and 6.5 cm wide.
