Japanese: ツノゼミ(角蟬) - ツノゼミ（英語表記）treehopper

Although the name means a cicada with a horn-like protrusion on its thorax, its body is small, none exceeding 20 mm. It is a general term for insects belonging to the Hemiptera, Homoptera, Membracidae family, or refers to one of these species. This group is closely related to leafhoppers, and although the basic body structure is very similar to that of other species, this genus is unique in that the pronotum has undergone a variety of strange changes. Many species have horns that protrude in various directions, such as forward, sideways, or backward, but there are also species whose pronotum is raised, extends backward, or becomes a thin vertical leaf piece.

胸部に角のような突起をもったセミという意味だが，体は小さく，20mmを超すものはいない。半翅目同翅亜目ツノゼミ科Membracidaeに属する昆虫の総称，またはそのうちの1種を指す。ヨコバイ類に近縁のグループで，基本的な体の構造は互いによく似ているが，この類が特異なのは前胸背部が奇妙な形に多様な変化を遂げていることである。種によって，前方，側方，後方などさまざまな方向に突出する角を有するものが多いが，前胸背が隆起する，後方へ伸長する，あるいは縦の薄い葉片となる仲間もある。
