A semi-conical seafloor depositional landform that develops like a fan toward the deep sea floor, with the mouth of a large river at the fan apex. Because the flow bed on the continental slope is steep, large amounts of turbidites (terrestrial sediments) are carried to the deep sea floor. On the deep sea floor, where the flow bed slope is shallower, the transport force decreases, so floating material is deposited in a fan shape. The flow bed on the alluvial fan branches out radially from the fan apex during floods of large rivers, and each branch shows a braided flow path.

大きな河川の河口を扇頂として，深海底に向かって扇状に発達する半円錐状の海底の堆積地形。大陸斜面は流床の勾配が急なため，大量のタービダイト（陸性堆積物）が深海底に運ばれる。流床の勾配が小さくなる深海底では運搬力が減少するため，浮遊物が扇状に堆積する。扇状地上の流床は，大きな河川の洪水時に扇頂から放射状に分流して，各分流は網状流路を示している。
