Artificial larynx

Japanese: 人工喉頭 - じんこうこうとう（英語表記）artificial larynx

An instrument used to produce speech after laryngectomy. When a patient has undergone surgery to remove the larynx due to laryngeal cancer, it is desirable to be able to produce speech through esophageal speech, but approximately 30-40% of patients are unable to do so. In such cases, as a second-best option, some kind of instrument is used to produce speech. Patients without a larynx usually have a hole in the trachea, and exhaled air from the lungs is guided through this hole to a whistle via a connecting tube, which vibrates a rubber band acting as a substitute vocal cord, and the sound is guided into the mouth to produce speech.

喉頭摘出手術後の発声に用いる器具。喉頭癌などで喉頭を摘出する手術を受けた場合，食道発声により声を出せるようになるのが望ましいが，3～4割程度の患者ではうまく習得できないことがある。この場合，次善の策として，なんらかの器具を用いて声を出すくふうが行われている。無喉頭者ではふつう気管に穴があいているので，この穴より肺からの呼気を連結管を介して笛部に導き，代用声帯としてのゴム帯を振動させ，この音を口腔内に導いて言葉を発するようにさせる。
