Horned lizard (Horsetail lizard)

Japanese: ツノトカゲ(角蜥蜴) - ツノトカゲ（英語表記）horned lizard

A general term for lizards in the genus Phrynosoma , family Iguanidae, that have horn-like protrusions on their heads. About 15 species are found in the United States, west of the Rocky Mountains, from Washington State south to Mexico and Guatemala, of which 7 species are found in the United States. They are small, measuring about 6-10 cm in total length, with even the largest species measuring 15-18 cm. There are 10 bony horn-like protrusions on the rear edge of the head, with the four at the back of the head being particularly large, but there are also species in which the two central horns are particularly large, as in the Texas horned lizard P. cornutum (illustration), all four are almost the same size, or all of the protrusions are extremely small.

頭部に角状突起のあるイグアナ科ツノトカゲ属Phrynosomaに属するトカゲの総称。アメリカ合衆国のロッキー山脈以西の，ワシントン州以南からメキシコ，グアテマラに15種ほどが分布し，そのうち7種がアメリカ合衆国に分布している。全長6～10cmほどの小型で，大きな種類の最大値でも15～18cmほど。頭部後縁には10本の骨質の角状突起があり，後頭部の4本がとくに大きいが，そのうちテキサスツノトカゲP.cornutum（イラスト）のように中央の2本がとくに大きいもの，4本がほぼ同大のもの，あるいは突起全体がきわめて小さい種類もある。
