In the 19th century, the influence of Italian opera was significant, and the national characteristics receded, but from the second half of the century to the 20th century, Alfredo Keil (1850-1907), José Vianna da Motta (1868-1948), and others were active as nationalists. Representatives of impressionistic or modernist styles in the 20th century include Luis de Freitas Branco (1890-1955) and Fernando Lopes Graça (1906- ).
