The residence of the Sengoku period daimyo Takeda clan of Kai, built on the alluvial fan of Aikawa at the southern foot of Mt. Hikage in what is now the northern part of Kofu city. It was built by Takeda Shintora in 1519, and even after Shintora, it served as the base for Takeda Shingen and Takeda Katsuyori to rule their territories. It was demolished in 1581 when Katsuyori moved to Shinjo Castle in Nirasaki (Shinpu Castle, present-day Nirasaki city). The main bailey, consisting of the eastern and middle baileys, served as the residence and government office of the Takeda clan, and also included the Inari bailey, the retirement bailey, and the western bailey. The entrance to the western bailey features a square-shaped tiger's mouth, characteristic of Takeda castles. In 1919, Takeda Shrine, dedicated to Takeda Shingen, was built on the site of the residence, and the entire area is now designated as a national historic site under the name of the Takeda clan residence ruins.
