Japanese: ミズキャラハゴケ（英語表記）Taxiphyllum barbieri (Card.et Copp.) Iwatsuki

An aquatic moss of the Polytrichum commune family (illustration). Native to Southeast Asia, it is often seen in Japan in freshwater fish tanks, but is not known to grow in the wild. It grows well in aquariums, spreading widely underwater, and its bright green color and delicate appearance make it suitable for use as a spawning ground for small fish as well as for decorative purposes. The stems reach a length of over 30 cm and produce numerous branches. The leaves open regularly in an almost flat plane, are boat-shaped, about 1 mm long, have a sharp tip, and have tiny sawtooth edges. The central vein is short, divided into two, and is not very noticeable.

サナダゴケ科の水生の蘚類（イラスト）。東南アジアの原産で，日本では淡水魚の飼育槽に多く見られるが，野生のものは知られていない。水槽中でよく繁茂して水中に大きく広がり，鮮緑色で繊細な姿が美しいので，小魚の産卵用とともに観賞用にも好適である。茎は長さ30cm以上に達し，多数の枝を出す。葉はほぼ平面的に規則正しく開出し，舟形で長さ1mm前後，鋭頭，辺縁に微小な鋸歯があり，中央脈は短く，2本に分かれ，あまり目だたない。
