Semiotics

Semiotics
Semiotics is also called semiology. It comes from the Greek word sēma (sign), and is the study of signs and their semantic connections. Philosophers have long been interested in semiotics, and linguists such as Saussure suggested the direction of research by positioning linguistics within semiotics, but it was C. Peirce and C.W. Morris who systematized semiotics as an academic field. Morris divided semiotics into three fields: (1) pragmatics, which studies the relationship between signs and their users; (2) semantics, which studies the relationship between signs and what they refer to; and (3) syntax, which studies the relationship between signs within a system. Semiotics is making a major contribution not only to modern linguistics and logic, but also to information theory and communication theory. Semiotic interpretations of various cultural and social phenomena have also been attempted, particularly by French structuralists. (→Linguistic signs)
