Mascon (English spelling)

Mascon (English spelling)
A place on the moon where gravity is abnormally concentrated. From the analysis of orbital data from the Lunar Orbiter 5 (launched August 1, 1967, and crashed into the moon on January 31, 1968), it was found that there is a heavy object with strong gravitational force in the ocean. Detailed investigations by Apollo 14, 15, and 16 revealed that there is a gravitational anomaly, that is, a concentration of mass, in craters and oceans with a diameter of more than 200 km. According to P. Muller and others from California Institute of Technology, "It seems that a meteorite is buried at the bottom of the round ocean," and this heavy object came to be called a "mascon," meaning "concentration of mass." There are several theories about the cause, including that a meteorite is buried there, or that heavy lava has erupted from the inside, but the currently most likely theory is that dense basalt and other rocks have accumulated underground.
