Markhor - Markhor (English spelling)

It is an animal of the order Artiodactyla, family Bovidae, class of Mammalia. It is also called the screw-horned goat. It is classified into six subspecies depending on the place of origin. It is distributed from Kashmir through the Himalayas to Afghanistan, and lives in the rugged highlands of mountainous regions. It is the largest species of wild goat, with a body length of 1.1 meters, shoulder height of 1 meter, and weight of 90 kilograms. Both males and females have horns, which at first glance look like corkscrews and can reach a length of 1.2 meters. The body color changes from brown in summer to gray in winter. Adult males have long hair on their chest and shoulders. The gestation period is 5 to 6 months, and one baby is born at a time. They mate in winter and give birth in spring. There are few populations, and they are protected internationally. In Japan, they are kept at Yumemigasaki Zoo in Kawasaki and Himeji Central Park.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱偶蹄(ぐうてい)目ウシ科の動物。ネジツノヤギともいう。産地によって6亜種に分類される。カシミールからヒマラヤを経てアフガニスタンまで分布し、山岳地帯の険しい高地に生息する。野生ヤギの最大種で、体長1.1メートル、肩高1メートル、体重90キログラム。角(つの)は雌雄いずれにもあり、一見コルクの栓抜きのようにねじれ、長さ1.2メートルに及ぶものがある。体色は、夏は茶色、冬期は灰色に変わる。成獣の雄では胸、肩に長毛が生える。妊娠期間は5～6か月で、1産1子。冬期に交尾し、春に出産する。生息数が少なく、国際的に保護されている。日本では、川崎市夢見ヶ崎動物公園、姫路(ひめじ)セントラルパークなどに飼育例がある。
