A basalt plateau island located in the northwestern tip of Yamaguchi Prefecture. It belongs to Toyokita Town, Shimonoseki City, and has an area of 3.84 square kilometers. A wooden tablet unearthed at the Heijo Palace site indicates the island as "Tsunoshima Island," and the Engishiki states that the island is "Tsunoshima Ushimaki, Nagato Province." The island is well cultivated, and there are two villages: the farming village of Motoyama and the fishing village of Oyama. A ferry used to depart from Kotoi Port on the mainland, but in 2000 (Heisei 12) the Tsunoshima Bridge connected the island directly to the mainland. It is part of the Kita-Nagato Coast Quasi-National Park, and in summer the camping village is bustling, and there are many anglers. Yumegasaki is home to the Tsunoshima Lighthouse (Important Cultural Property), a first-class lighthouse that was lit in 1876 (Meiji 9). Population 941 (2000).
