Zimmermann

Japanese:
Zimmermann
German composer. Born near Cologne. He studied composition while also majoring in philosophy and linguistics. After a break due to conscription, he began composing in earnest after World War II. In 1961, he became a professor at his alma mater, the Cologne School of Music. He was a little older than the generation of postwar composers such as Boulez and Stockhausen, and continued his own unique explorations without joining any particular school. His unique style of composition, which combined various techniques, made him an eclectic side stream during his lifetime, but his diverse works, which inherit Berg's idiom, have been significantly reevaluated in recent years. His opera Die Soldiers (1958-1960, adapted 1963-1964, premiered in 1965), based on a play by J. Lenz, is a unique work that pursues a multi-dimensional time structure by making full use of techniques such as quotation and collage, and is said to be the greatest opera of the post-World War II era. Other works he composed include stage works, ballet music, concertos and orchestral works such as "Antifonen" for viola and small orchestra (1961-1962), "Cello Concerto in the form of Bas de Trois" (1965-1966), one solo sonata each for violin, viola and cello (1951, 1955, 1960), and music for tapes. He became ill and committed suicide.
