A term referring to a certain type of pop singer who appeared in the 1930s. B. Crosby was a representative example, characterized by a soft, slightly nasal voice and a style of phrasing learned from jazz. Whereas singers up until that point had been singing melodies directly in a high-pitched voice, Crosby's chic, light-hearted feel was well received. His soft vocal style also made good use of microphones, which had just started to become widespread around that time. [Nakamura Toyo] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
