A Yugoslav literary figure. Born in Slovenia. He studied classical languages in Vienna but dropped out. While working as a magazine editor, he also began writing, becoming Slovenia's first novelist. In his 1867 novel Ten Brothers, he preached a romantic morality of rewarding good and punishing evil against the backdrop of a lord's family, castle, and village life, but in his novella The Neighbor's Son (1868), he used realistic techniques to depict unhappy love and intergenerational conflict. He also wrote plays, and was a pioneer in the field of serious literary criticism. [Tanaka Issei]

ユーゴスラビアの文学者。スロベニアの生れ。ウィーンで古典語を学ぶが中退，雑誌編集者をつとめるかたわら自らも筆を執り，スロベニア初の小説家となる。1867年の《十人兄弟》では，領主の家族，城，村の生活を背景にロマン主義的な勧善懲悪を説いたが，中編《隣の息子》(1868)では，不幸な恋や世代間の葛藤をリアリズム的な手法で描ききった。ほかに戯曲もあり，また本格的な文芸評論家のさきがけともなった。【田中一生】
