Forbidden City - Kokyu

Japanese: 故宮 - こきゅう

The Forbidden City, the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties in Beijing, China. Since the establishment of the Republic of China, it has been called the Forbidden City. Construction began in 1407 when Emperor Yongle moved the national capital to Beijing. It is a vast area measuring approximately 760m east to west and 960m north to south, and many buildings, including the main hall, the Taihe Hall, are neatly arranged within the high walls. These buildings are currently preserved as cultural assets, with the Wumen Gate open to the public as the History Museum and the Inner Court as the Palace Museum, and the square in front of Tiananmen Square used for rallies on National Day and May Day. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1987.

中国，北京にある明・清朝の宮城，紫禁城のこと。中華民国成立以後は故宮と呼ばれている。1407年永楽帝が国都を北京に移すと同時に着工したもの。東西約760m，南北約960mの広大な地域で，高い城壁に囲まれた中に，正殿である太和殿をはじめ多くの建物が整然と配置されている。現在これらの建物は文化財として保存され，午門は歴史博物院，内廷は故宮博物院として公開され，天安門前の広場は国慶節やメーデーの集会に利用されている。1987年世界文化遺産に登録。
