Five Elements - Gogyoushi (English: Wǔ xíng zhì)

Japanese: 五行志 - ごぎょうし（英語表記）Wǔ xíng zhì

A type of spirit among the official histories of China. It records various disasters and their interpretations. It begins with the "Five Elements" section of the "Book of Han," and goes on to Fu Sheng's "Hong Fan Five Elements" and its commentary, which links the "Hong Fan" chapter of the "Shang Shu" to the theory of the five elements. It also presents the interpretations of Dong Zhongshu, Liu Xiang, and Liu Xin on the disasters recorded in the "Spring and Autumn Annals" and those that occurred during the Western Han Dynasty. It is permeated with the position that disasters are warnings from heaven to humans, the so-called heaven-man correlation theory.

中国の正史のなかの志の一種。さまざまの災異とそれについての解釈を記す。《漢書》五行志にはじまり，《尚書》洪範篇を五行の理論にむすびつけた伏生の《洪範五行伝》およびその解説，また《春秋》に記された災異と前漢代におこった災異についての董仲舒（とうちゆうじよ）･劉向（りゆうきよう）･劉歆（りゆうきん）たちの解釈を示すが，災異は天が人間にあたえる警告であるとの立場，いわゆる天人相関説の立場によってつらぬかれている。
