A representative German Protestant church historian. Born on May 7th in Dorpat, Russia, as the son of Theodosius Harnack (1817-1889), a theologian known for his research on Luther. After studying theology at the universities of his hometown and Leipzig, he became a professor of church history at the University of Leipzig. After serving as a professor at the universities of Giessen and Marburg, he became a professor at the University of Berlin in 1888. Inheriting Ritschl's academic style, which stood on the position of liberal theology, he published a wide range of research on historical theology, including research on Gnosticism. In his main work, the three volumes of The History of Doctrine (1885-1889), he interprets the establishment of the ancient doctrine of the Trinity as a gradual Hellenization of Christianity, and argues that heresy arose from rapid Hellenization. His major works include "The Essence of Christianity" (1900), "The Mission and Development of Christianity up to the Third Century" (1903), and "Marcion" (1921). Aiming to integrate Christianity and modern culture, he participated in the cultural administration of Prussia and served as director of the National Library. He died on June 10, 1930, in Heidelberg, where he had been traveling.
