One of the Tai languages, spoken by the Zhuang people in southwestern China. Also called Chuan. It has a population of about 7.7 million speakers, most of whom live in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Along with Buyi in Guizhou Province and Li on Hainan Island, it forms the Northern Group of Tai languages. Phonological characteristics include (1) a lack of aspirated sounds (although preserved in parts of Southern Zhuang), (2) a distinction between velar fricatives and plosives in Proto-Tai, and (3) the preservation of the voiceless r of the Proto-Tai language. Chinese influence can be seen in grammar and vocabulary. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
