Salaf

Japanese: salaf
Salaf

...the main current that runs through the thought and movement of modern Islamic reform. Generally, salafiyya, which means ancestors, here refers to the companions (sahaba) of the Prophet Muhammad, or the people who supported the Ummah in its early stages. Here, salafiyya (Salafism) refers to a position that aims to restore the principles and spirit of early Islam by rejecting bid'a (later deviations and distortions). It is not simply restorationism, because it rigorously questions what the original point is to return to, what the traditions that need to be purified are.
