A perennial plant of the Aragonaceae family that prefers wetlands and is cultivated for ornamental purposes. It grows to a height of about 1.5m and is covered with white powder. The basal leaves have 30-50cm long petioles and leathery blades that are long and ovate like cannas and about 50cm long. In summer, it produces upright or obliquely ascending flower stalks and bears purple flowers about 2cm in diameter in cone-shaped inflorescences. The fruit is a spherical capsule, and the seeds are brown and spherical. Native to southeastern North America, it is cold-resistant and overwinter in deep water outdoors or in shallow water in unheated greenhouses.

水湿地を好むクズウコン科の多年草で，観賞用に栽植される。高さ1.5mほどになり，全体に白粉をかぶる。根生する葉は長さ30～50cmの葉柄と，カンナに似た長卵形で長さ50cmほどの革質の葉身を有する。夏季に直立あるいは斜上する花茎を出し，円錐状の花序に径2cmほどの紫色の花をつける。果実は球形の蒴果（さくか）で，種子は褐色で球形。北アメリカ南東部原産で，耐寒性があり，屋外であれば深水を，無加温温室であれば浅い水中で越冬する。
