Joruri Gidayu-bushi (a type of Japanese drama with a story of a family). Two volumes. Written by Chikamatsu Monzaemon. First performed at the Takemotoza Theater in Osaka in August 1717 (Kyoho 2). This dramatizes the female revenge that took place at Koraibashi Bridge in Osaka in July of the same year, using the name of a handsome spearman from a popular song as the male protagonist. While her husband is away in Edo, Osai, the wife of tea ceremony master Asaka Ichinoshin, is asked by her disciple Sasano Gonzo to teach her the secrets of tea ceremony on the condition that she becomes his daughter's husband. During this time, an argument breaks out over Yuki, the younger sister of Kawazura Bannojo, with whom Gonzo has had a long-standing relationship. Bannojo, who has been hiding in the garden, calls them out for adultery and takes away their obi as evidence. Osai accepted the stigma of infidelity and ran away with Gonzaburo, only to be killed by Ichinoshin at Kyobashi in Fushimi. This is one of Chikamatsu's three great adultery stories, along with "Daikyoji Mukashigoyomi" and "Horikawa Naminotsuzumi." It is notable for the way it portrays the intense passion of the female protagonist, who takes advantage of the daughter to become jealous, and in recent years it has been adapted into Bunraku, Kabuki, new theater, and film.
