Kumamoto City is located in central Kumamoto Prefecture, occupying part of the Kumamoto Plain and the northern half of the Uto Peninsula. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. The central city, where the Kagoshima Main Line runs and where the Misumi Line branches off, was the castle of Konishi Yukinaga in the early modern period, a center of Christian culture, and later developed as a castle town for the Hosokawa clan. Currently, an inland industrial area has been formed along National Routes 3 and 57, and industrial shipments are growing, mainly in steel, chemicals, and food. It is also becoming a commuter town for Kumamoto City. Seaweed and shellfish farming, mandarin oranges, and melons are thriving. The Uto Yagura turret of Kumamoto Castle was relocated from Uto Castle (Tsuru Castle). Hanazono Recreation Area is located in the east. 74.30 km2 . Population: 37,727 (2010).
