The name means "separatist" in Russian. It is also called "Old Rite" and is the name given to believers who were excommunicated from the Russian Orthodox Church (1667) for opposing the liturgical reforms of Patriarch Nikon of Moscow. The sect gained support from a wide range of people who opposed state control of religion, and survived despite severe oppression and internal divisions, and was officially recognized by the government in 1881. It still has a certain influence today.

ロシア語で〈分離派〉の意。モスクワ総主教ニコンの典礼改革に反対してロシア正教会から破門（1667年）された信徒の称で，〈古儀礼派〉ともいう。宗教の国家統制に異を唱える広範な層の支持を得て，厳しい弾圧と内部分裂にもかかわらず存続，1881年には政府の公認を得た。現在も一定の教勢を有する。
