〘Noun〙① In China, a lower-ranking official with a relatively high salary and rank of over 600 koku. Also, a local official with a salary of around 200 to 400 koku. ※The Chronicles (720), August, 16th year of the reign of Empress Suiko (Iwasaki edition, Muromachi period text) "The messenger , chief official, and the high- ranking Suin arrived with a stipend in hand. " [Han Shu - Jingdi Chronicle] ② A particularly outstanding member of the group serving the imperial court with specialized skills and abilities. ※Montoku Jitsuroku - February 852, 2nd year of the reign of Emperor Montoku "Since ancient times, chief officials have always feared their stipends and never dared to enter their ranks . " ③ A Buddhist term. A position that oversees and manages the affairs of a temple as its chief. Also, a monk who holds that position. This title was used especially at Onjo-ji Temple, Kanshuji Temple, and Yokokawa Ryogon -in Temple at Enryaku-ji Temple. It corresponds to the head priest , inspector , or betto of other temples. [Sankai-ki, April 7, 1161] 4. In the Middle Ages, the title given to the leader of a group of hinin in Kinai and Kinkaku. In particular, in the Edo period, the title given to the leader of hinin who belonged to the yoriki and doshin in Osaka and worked as detectives, such as searching for and arresting criminals. Tobita, Sennichimae, Tenma, and Tennoji were designated as the residences of hinin, and the title given to the four leaders of each group. [Osaka Ranshisho Ippen (1674)] 5. In the Edo period, it was another name for eta , mainly in the Kanto region. Originally a job title for controlling the lower classes, it became a title of social status. The eta living in the provinces under the control of the eta chief Danzaemon were called zaikata no choris (local chiefs) , and those who controlled them were called choris kogashira (chief chiefs). 〘名〙① 中国で、吏(下級役人)の中で六百石以上の比較的俸祿・官位の高い役人。また、地方の吏では二百石から四百石ぐらいの役人。※書紀(720)推古一六年八月(岩崎本室町時代訓)「使人(つかひ)長吏(チャウリ)(らい)蘇因高等(たち)(まう)てて懐を具(つふさ)にす」 〔漢書‐景帝紀〕② 専門的な能力・技術をもって朝廷につかえる集団の構成員のうち、特にすぐれたもの。※文徳実録‐仁寿二年(852)二月壬戌「古来長吏、皆懐恐怖、不敢入其部」③ 仏語。一寺院首席としてその事務を統理、総管する地位。また、その地位にある僧。特に、園城寺・勧修寺・延暦寺の横川楞厳院(よかわりょうごんいん)などで用いた称。他の寺院の座主(ざす)・検校(けんぎょう)・別当などにあたる。〔山槐記‐永暦二年(1161)四月七日〕④ 中世、畿内、近国で、非人集団を統率する頭の称。特に、江戸時代、大坂で、与力・同心に属して犯罪人の探索や逮捕などの目明しの仕事に当たった非人の頭の称。非人の居住地として、鳶田・千日・天満・天王寺が決められ、それぞれの集団の四人の長を称した。〔大坂濫觴書一件(1674)〕⑤ 江戸時代、主として関東での穢多(えた)の別称。もと賤民統制の職名であったが、身分の称となった。穢多頭弾左衛門の支配をうける地方在住の穢多を在方(ざいかた)長吏といい、それを支配するものを長吏小頭と呼んだ。〔地方凡例録(1794)〕
