An ethnic minority group living in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China, as well as in the provinces of Yunnan, Guangdong, Guizhou, and Hunan. The population was approximately 15.55 million (1990), of which 90% was in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. They are the most populous of all the ethnic minorities in China. In Chinese documents, they were once called the Bai people and the Jiefang Bian people, but this has now been changed to the Zhuang people. The ethnic group has a long history in the Guangxi region, and the Xiou and Luoyue people, part of the Baiyue who lived in the Guangxi and Guangdong areas before the Qin dynasty's influence, are considered to be their ancestors.
