A general term for insects belonging to the Diptera family, Psychodidae. The Japanese name was translated from the German Schmetterlingsmücken by a scholar in the Meiji period, and together with the English name, it means a fly with wings that have scales like those of Lepidoptera insects (butterflies and moths). Taxonomically, they are more closely related to mosquitoes than to flies, and about 60 species have been recorded in Japan. Adults are mostly small, with body lengths of 1 to 5 mm, and have black or gray-brown markings on their wings, which they fold in a roof shape when at rest.
