Chonosukesou - Chonosukesou

Japanese: チョウノスケソウ - ちょうのすけそう
Chonosukesou - Chonosukesou

An evergreen shrub of the Rosaceae family (APG classification: Rosaceae). The stem is well branched and creeps along the ground. The leaves are simple and stalked. The leaflets are broadly elliptical and leathery, with dense white down on the underside and sawtoothed edges. In July and August, a single white flower about 2 cm in diameter blooms on a 5-10 cm flower stalk. There are 8 to 9 petals. After flowering, the style elongates to 3-4 cm and becomes tail-like with long hairs. The fruit is an achene. It grows in the high mountains of the Chubu region and Hokkaido, and is distributed in the Korean Peninsula, Ussuri, Karafuto (Sakhalin), and the Kuril Islands. The name was given to commemorate the discoverer of this species, Chonosuke Sugawa (who assisted the Russian botanist Maksimovich in collecting it). The genus Polytrichum has two or three species that grow in the high mountains and polar regions of the Northern Hemisphere and are famous as relics of the Ice Age.
