An island in the central North Pacific Ocean, about 1000 km southwest of Hawaii, located in an atoll and a territory of the United States. The reef flat is about 25 km in circumference and has two islands, Johnston and Sand. The Englishman Johnston reached it in 1807, and it has been annexed by the United States and the Kingdom of Hawaii since 1858. It is a US military air base and a storage base for chemical weapons.
