Date Harumune

A military commander in the Sengoku period. Son of Tanemune, his mother was the daughter of Ashina Moritaka, and his childhood name was Jiro. He was a Junior Fourth Rank Lower. He received one character from his given name from Ashikaga Yoshiharu and took the name Harumune. In 1542, he opposed his younger brother Sanemoto's succession to the Uesugi clan of Echigo, and fought with his father Tanemune for 17 years (Tenbun Rebellion). After the rebellion, he moved to Yonezawa Castle, was appointed as Sakyo no Daibu and Oshu Tandai, and was recognized as a daimyo by the Muromachi shogunate. In 1590, he created the "Date Harumune Saiji Shiroku" and re-issued fiefs to his vassals, and further destroyed the Kakeda clan, strengthening his control over his vassals and his rule within his domain. He also expanded his power by having his children succeed and marry into the Satake, Iwaki, Ashina, and Rusu clans. However, by around 1564, he had retired to Suginome Castle (Sugitsuma-cho, Fukushima City). His grave is at Fukushima clan Hosho-ji Temple.

戦国時代の武将。稙宗の子,母は蘆名盛高の娘,幼名称次郎。従四位下。足利義晴から諱の1字をもらい晴宗と名乗る。天文11(1542)年弟実元の越後上杉氏への入嗣に反対し,父稙宗と17年まで兵戈を交えた(天文の乱)。乱後,米沢城に移り,左京大夫,奥州探題に補任され,室町幕府から大名のひとりに認められた。22年『伊達晴宗采地下賜録』を作成して家臣に対する知行判物を再交付し,さらに懸田氏を滅ぼして,家臣団統制,領内支配を強化した。また子どもらを佐竹,岩城,蘆名,留守諸氏に入嗣,入嫁させ勢力を拡大。しかし,永禄7(1564)年ごろまでには杉目城(福島市杉妻町)に隠居。墓は福島氏宝積寺。
