A type of dance in Noh. It is moderate in nature and is danced by many characters, and is considered the basis of all dances. The speed is slightly slower than moderate, but varies depending on the performance. It is officially composed of four sections and five verses (five sections and six verses depending on the school), but in recent years it is often performed in a simplified form of three sections and four verses. There are "dai-sho-naka-no-mai" which is performed with a flute, small drum, and large drum, and "taiko-naka-no-mai" which includes a drum. Dai-sho-naka-no-mai is performed gently, and real beauties such as "Yuya" and "Funa-Benkei", mad women such as "Hanjo" and "Hibariyama", and katsushiki such as "Jinen-koji" are danced.
