A city in the province of North Holland in the northwest of the Netherlands. It is located in the centre of the reclaimed land of the old Lake Haarlem southwest of Amsterdam, and faces the Ringvaart (canal) and the West Eindersee. As the centre of floriculture in the Netherlands, it has two flower markets and is also home to the National Horticultural Experiment Station. The older part of the town is on peat bog land close to sea level, but the rest is on clay polders (reclaimed land) below sea level. It produces and exports cut flowers such as carnations, roses, lilacs and freesias, as well as potted plants such as cyclamens and begonias. Population: 22,118 (estimated 1992). オランダ北西部,ノールトホラント州の都市。アムステルダム南西の旧ハールレム湖の干拓地の中心をなし,リングファールト (運河) およびウェストアインデル湖に面する。オランダにおける花卉栽培の中心として2つの花卉市場をもち,国立園芸試験場もある。町の古い部分は海面すれすれの泥炭地上にあるが,その他の部分は,海面よりも低い粘土質のポルダー (干拓地) である。カーネーション,バラ,ライラック,フリージアなどの切花とシクラメン,ベゴニアなどの鉢物のほか種苗も生産し,輸出も行なっている。人口2万 2118 (1992推計) 。
